Be WISE Camp
The Be WISE Camp is a mathematic/science camp designed to develop interest, excitement and self-confidence in girls entering 7th or 8th grades in September. It is a week long residential camp held in June on the campus of Denison University in Granville, Ohio. The majority of the experienced teachers have been involved in Be WISE Camp since it began in 1989. It features hands-on activities in math and science with class size ratio of 10 students per teacher. Some specific objectives for the campers are:
- To discover that doing math and science is fun
- To reduce math/science anxiety
- To help raise their math/science state test scores
- To build their self-esteem
- To motivate the girls to continue their math/science education in high school and college
- To provide positive career role models
Our Westerville Branch of AAUW sends four girls to camp each year, one from each middle school. We provide part of the cost of the camp for each girl. Funds come from our annual cheese sale in the fall. Girls who have attended in past summers have told us about meeting new friends, learning about astronomy and how to make a robot arm, going swimming and having group sing-a-longs…and from one of their letters, simply “the camp was GREAT!”
